Who is required to take the Hunter Safety Class?
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1975 must successfully
complete a Hunter Safety Class in order to purchase a hunting
license.
How old does someone have to be to take the Hunter Safety
Class?
Students can take the class on or after their 10th
birthday while accompanied by an adult. Students 14 and above can
take the course without an adult being present.
How long is the Hunter Safety Class?
The Hunter Safety Class is 10 hours long.
What does a Hunter Safety Class cover?
Wildlife Management, safe gun handling, game care, first aid,
survival, specialty hunting (archery, black powder, pistols),
wildlife indentification,
How much does it cost to take the Hunter Safety Class?
The class is free.
Do I have to attend the entire Hunter Safety Class, or can I just
take the test?
You have to attend the entire 10 hour class and then pass the
test.
Is the W. Va. Hunter Safety Class recognized in other states?
Yes. It is recognized in all 50 states and Canada.
What do I do if I miss part of the Hunter Safety Class?
You can have a transfer slip that is valid for 90 days. Any part
of the class that you have had will not have to be retaken.
Do I have to take a Hunter Safety Class in order to hunt in
another state?
Check with that state’s hunting regulations.
How do I become a Hunter Safety Instructor?
You first must have taken the class and passed. After that, call
the DNR office nearest you and express your interest in becoming an
